Guided Surgery Program

What the Guided Surgery Program Does

Our practice is outfitted with state-of-the-art technology that makes it possible to create highly detailed and accurate digital imaging of your teeth and oral bone structure. We use a type of imaging technology called Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) by Planmeca®, which creates 3D images of your teeth, soft tissues, nerve pathways, and bone in a single scan. We also use the 3Shape Trios® digital intraoral scanner, which is simply a handheld wand that our specialists use to create 3D scans of your teeth.

The information from both of these scans can be merged together to create a highly detailed and accurate digital version of your mouth. This image is sent to a laboratory where an overlay is created that includes the new dental implants. Essentially, a template is made that is specifically designed for your mouth and surgical needs. Then it is sent back to Dr. Ioppolo. During your procedure, your oral surgeon will place this template in your mouth, which details exactly where the implant will go, and the surgery is completed more effectively and efficiently.

Benefits of Guided Surgery

Using guided surgery means that our oral surgeon knows exactly where nerves are located and can easily avoid them. It also makes it less likely for multiple incisions because the guide shows the doctor precisely where the implant should go, which means the surgery time is shorter and your recovery can be faster. Another benefit is that this allows for flapless surgery by not needing to peel back layers of tissue. Everything can be seen in your detailed 3D scans!

In addition to being minimally invasive, guided surgery also means
